The largest Iranian warship, the “IRIS Makran”
The Iranian Navy has unveiled its largest warship. Its name is ‘IRIS Makran’.
It is the largest warship in the Iranian Navy. Iran has taken such a step amid mounting tensions with the United States over its nuclear program.
Al Jazeera reports that the IRIS Makran can transport five helicopters. At the same time, another ship has been added to the Iranian navy that can launch missiles.
The IRIS Makran is approximately 228 meters (748 feet) long. It used to be an oil tanker. Later in Iran, it was turned into a warship using indigenous technology. The ship will participate in the search and rescue operation. Apart from this, members of Special Forces will be detained and sent on various missions from this ship. From here also fast small boats are sent for various purposes.
IRIS Makran made its debut as part of a military exercise, Reuters reported. The exercise lasted two days in the Sea of Oman. Iranian naval officer Admiral Hamjeh Ali Kaviani was the spokesperson for the exercise. “Through this exercise, we will be able to make the necessary assessments of our own abilities and also get a sense of our own level of strength,” he said.
Last week, Iran seized a South Korean oil tanker and its crewmembers in the Gulf and continues to detain the ship in an Iranian port. The Islamic Republic has apparently been trying to increase its influence over Seoul ahead of conferences over billions of dollars in Iranian assets frozen in South Korean banks linked to US sanctions against Iran.
Saudi Arabia and Israel, known as the United States and its allies, have always viewed Iran’s missile program with suspicion. They see Iran’s missile program as a security threat. At the moment, Iran’s relations with the West are not going well, even with the 2015 nuclear program restriction agreement. Meanwhile, Iran announced the news of a new military ship.
