Firm Hank Aaron National Baseball Hall has died at the age of 86, a spokesman confirmed Friday.

Aaron was a pioneer of sports and a trailblazer. About 50 years ago Aaron surpassed Ruth in terms of career home runs and is now second behind Barry Bond.

At a time when 17.4% of Major League Baseball players were African American, according to the Society for American Baseball Research, Aaron was able to distinguish himself as an icon.

“My mother told me I had what I had to give and that I had to be very careful,” Aaron said in an interview with NBC News.
