On this day, the Canadian-American physical educator, who was also a professor, physician, and coach, announced the new game and original rules on the pages of “The Triangle,” a school newspaper of Springfield College. From humble beginnings in a school gymnasium, the sport has grown into an international colossus played today in over 200 countries.

Born November 6, 1861, near the town of Almonte in Ontario, Canada. Naismith completed a bachelor’s degree in physical education from McGill University. He took a job as an instructor at the YMCA International Training College in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1890. At this college, he was tasked with developing an indoor game that could keep students entertained during the harsh New England winters. With two peach baskets, a football, and only ten lines, the “game of basketball” was born.

 

Introduced to Naismith’s class on December 21, 1891. The game initially featured teams of nine players and combined elements of outdoor sports such as American football, soccer, and hockey. Despite initial skepticism, the sport exploded in popularity in the following years, and basketball made its Olympic debut in 1936 in Berlin, Germany.
